How much time

is realistic to devote to one client?

Especially if you have a full caseload, a ton of paperwork and the tasks that this person is throwing your way could easily fill up 40 hours per week?

How do you set your boundaries with clients like this?

I've been struggling with this lately.

P.S. This is also the type of guy who is quick to claim "neglect". I already document everything.

  1. Make/review a service agreement with this client!

Be stern about the amount of time you will meet with him, or the number of phone messages you will allow him in a week!

    Call in the reinforcements!

Tell him for every one task you do for him, he must complete two!

Make a prioritized goal list, and commit to working on them only one at a time!

It's so important in our job to maintain firm boundaries. For us, it helps avoid burnout. For the client, it avoids creating learned helplessness.

I have a co-worker who often repeats her mantra to her clients: "I'm not here to work any harder than you will".
